Kinetic Virtual Radar in North America ...
The SBS-1 is an affordable, lightweight Mode-S/ADS-B Real-Time
Virtual Radar Receiver decoding transponder signals from the aircraft.
Combining state-of-the art electronics and new technological advances has enabled Kinetic Avionic Products
Limited to create the revolutionary SBS-1. For the first time aircraft enthusiasts worldwide are able to directly monitor the skies in an unprecedented
fashion. Additionally the SBS-1 provides small and medium sized airfields many of the safety and operational benefits previously only available to
large international airports - at a fraction of current radar costs. Coupled with the, soon to be released, Kinetic Lightweight Aviation SSR Transponder,
the SBS-1 becomes an invaluable tool in flight training operations. Furthermore, the SBS-1 can also be used for ATC training.
There is no question that ATC radar is expensive. Indeed, many smaller airports can’t afford to pay a
radar-qualified controller, let alone buy the hardware. But help may be at hand. With many years’ experience in the avionics field, particularly in the
development of DME equipment, London-based electronics company Kinetic Avionic Products has devised a “virtual radar” that is small, lightweight and inexpensive.
Contained in a box approximately the size of a videocassette, it can be coupled to a computer via the USB port,
and it displays all mode-S/ADS-B transponder transmissions up to a range of 250 miles.
Because the virtual radar is portable, the user must enter the latitude and longitude of the receiver,
but when the setup is done the display will show all waypoints and airports within the operational area. The map display has a default setting with true
north at the top, but this can be rotated as required, and all aircraft trails are color-coded to indicate climb, descent or level flight.
The system has the usual array of functions, including a zoom that allows the range and display scale to be
varied as required. The screen is split, with the map display occupying the left three-quarter of the screen and the right side displaying a table of
aircraft information based on the mode-s transmissions. The operator can adjust the width of each display for a full representation of all the columns
to show the status of all, or individual, air craft in terms of continuity of transmission; ADS-B information; climb, descent or level flight; squawk
code; nationality and all flight parameters.
The SBS-1 Real-time Virtual Radar Receiver brings Air Traffic Control (ATC) information to anyone with a desktop or laptop computer.
The system provides a ‘picture’ of all aircraft fitted with a Mode S/ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast) SSR (Secondary Surveillance Radar)
transponder system within a line of sight distance to the SBS-1 antenna.
The SBS-1 has a wide variety of possible uses within the aviation industry. To the enthusiast, it provides
details of what aircraft can be seen from his or her location and what is arriving and departing at a local airport. It is not just the enthusiast who
will benefit, however. When Mode-S is installed on all aircraft, ATC at smaller airfields with no ‘real’ radar will be able to use the SBS-1 linked via
a computer to advice aircraft of possible conflicts. Flying schools can use the SBS-1 system to ‘watch’ students on solo flights or on navigational exercises
to ensure that they do not get lost.
